“What if I told you that bigger isn’t always better?” our host Mike Musto starts the latest edition of drive’s Big Muscle series with. Chances are most people in the Middle East would roll off their chairs, sides positively split.

And when it comes to the Ford Mustang, a prominent member of muscle car royal family, the statement seems even more bizarre. It’s a challenge though taken up by Mike, eponymous owner of Maier Racing tuners, and one ably demonstrated by this 1966 Mustang Coupe. Originally a toy for the Maier family, a tweak here, a tune there and new suspension (ironically developed to begin with for comfort rather than precision) means that not only does the Coupe accelerate like a muscle car, it handles like a touring car.

As Mike explains, ‘Maier Racing is about one thing: winning’. Just ask him about the Mustang’s track record…
