A surprisingly dominant race in which he led 167 of the 200 laps also further pushed the oft-criticised CART/Indy Racing League divide under the spotlight. Montoya and Ganassi teammate Jimmy Vasser were the first CART drivers to make the jump, albeit temporarily, after ‘the split’. Immediate victory was both embarrassing for the IRL regulars (many of whom thought the precocious Colombian would end his 500 tenure in the barriers) and an eye-opener for other CART teams and drivers looking on, Penske and Newman-Haas to name but a few.
Good job Montoya’s earlier efforts haven’t put too much pressure ahead of his Indy 500 return.
