Amongst the countless companies hawking a variety of electronic wares at the GITEX exhibition sits a bright white Ford stand with the new 2011 Edge taking pride of place. Ford is using the exhibition to showcase the new technology that’s bestowed on the five-seater crossover.

The key new feature is MyFord Touch which is a development of the SYNC system that comes fitted to a lot of the US-sourced models in Ford’s showrooms across the Middle East. Alongside seamless integration of your mobile or iPod through Bluetooth or USB to pump your choice of music through the sound system, MyFord Touch can also turn the Edge into a moving wi-fi hotspot.

You can hook your phone up to the car – so long as you have a suitable data package enabled – and passengers can connect their laptops, iPads or suchlike to browse on the move. Ford was using the Edge as their own private wi-fi connection at Gitex to get around paying the fees that Du and Etisalat were asking to tag onto their hotspots.

Away from the technology, we were quite taken with the new much-more aggressive styling of the Edge, especially on the Sport model displayed. Here, the deeper front grille is finished in ‘Tuxedo black’ and coupled with the 22-inch alloys gives the Edge quite a presence. However, Phil was more interested to see if he can bag a set of the 22-inch rims for the C&P Flex mobile fridge.
