I alight rather gingerly, much to the confusion of the other two gentlemen I shall be sharing today’s drive with, but start to relax when I see the familiar driving accouterments in front of me: steering column and seat adjustment controls, automatic gearbox, an uncluttered and easy-to-use instrument panel, and so on and so forth.

Wait, hang on, where’s the key? Oh, right, it’s there. Okay, seatbelt on. There doesn’t seem to be any hidden trick to driving the beast, so it looks like I’m quids in! The head of our saloon convoy moves away up ahead, the trip computer is zero-ed, and we’re off!

Fortunately I’ve noticed the illuminated ‘Platinum’ on the doorsill in the opening stages, so I at least know what model I’m driving: 304hp 3.6-litre V6, all-wheel drive six-speed automatic transmission, lane-departure warning, head-up display, UltraView sunroof, leather upholstery with wood trim, and ventilated front seats. Indeed, I’ve already started easing myself further into the leather as we hit the one-kilometre mark. That’s also, unfortunately, where we hit Dubai traffic, and consequently slow to a standstill.

No matter, says the voice from the back seat. This gives you the chance to have a go with CUE (Cadillac’s new in-vehicle control and connectivity system), which makes its debut on the XTS for the first time. Why don’t I have a go and see what I think, suggests the voice.
