My ‘push this button and see what happens’ attempts register a raised eyebrow or two, and it quickly becomes clear that my efforts will not be met with riotous applause and heartfelt congratulations. It does though raise one question:
“You were at the media briefing, weren’t you?”
Okay. Time to come clean.

I listen attentively, throwing in a sheepish nod now and again, as my travelling companions in their Cadillac branded shirts explain the system for a second time. As they do so, our nine-strong XTS convoy continues its surprisingly tense journey from The Pavilion in Downtown Dubai in rush hour traffic before pulling up at the Meydan Racecourse three-quarters of an hour later.

This break in our introductory drive gives me the chance to speak with my black-shirted Cadillac hosts about the new mid-size addition to their line-up. The new model is marketed, I’m informed, as the most technologically advanced production car in the brand’s history, a car that apparently offers the brand identity but through new and technically advanced methods of luxury.

This then is far more than a redesigned dashboard and an extra couple of paint schemes. Cadillac, and parent company General Motors, clearly has big ambitions for the new saloon. Ambitions which, let’s be honest, are hard to recognize after less than an hour behind the wheel. Admittedly the handling has proven taut, the power linear and easy to put down, and the brakes responsive, but that jus doesn’t feel very conclusive. That doesn’t feel like a real world test.
