The rear could be seen as a bit plain perhaps, with the design of the taillights a bit too subtle for the setting, but overall GM has produced a neat little package. The opening twenty minutes of our drive is spent on the road, travelling to our dedicated gravel area. And first impressions are…mixed. Chevrolet has worked hard to up the ante from the previous model, meaning the ride is comfortable and smooth and the leather upholstery adds a touch of glamour to the nearly off-road proceedings.

Suddenly though our convoy makes a dive onto the beaten track just outside Wadi Kub. We’re pulled up, and told to select high-range 4WD and knock off the traction control. The opening five or ten minutes are spent rumbling across the camel-tracked terrain, the dust from which immediately cloaks the Trailblazer derriere we have hitherto been following. Fog lights on!

Certainly Chevy’s latest recruit commendably attacks the terrain, and when we hit a particularly rocky section (where low-range is required), the Trailblazer is given its first real workout.
