Autocross is one of the great grassroots motorsports. A challenge of drivers skill on a timed course with obstacles to navigate and few limitations in which car you can choose to compete in. As a general rule, it comes down to driving ability and memorization of the usually tricky track.
However, give it a fancy name like Gymkhana (from the Hindi-Urdu word ‘Jamat-Khana’) and apply a heavy dose of X Games cool. Add some celebrities such as Tanner Foust and Ken Block. Have the drivers piloting unbridled WRC cars that cost a fortune. Televise it on ESPN and get some big hitting sponsors for the event (the US Navy) and you have, well, something a bit different.
