Ford’s brand new GT supercar has made its regional debut at the 2015 Dubai International Motor Show. The follow-up to the follow-up to Ford’s 60s icon was first unveiled ahead of the Detroit Motor Show, and left audiences gaping in Frankfurt this September. Seems little has changed on home turf…
The new GT is one of 12 new performance models expected from Ford before 2020, the others including the Focus RS, the new F-150 Raptor, and the Shelby GT350R among others. Production for the GT though begins early next year to coincide with not only Ford’s return to Le Mans but also the Blue Oval’s 1-2-3-4 finish at the 1966 24 Hours of Le Mans.
Powered by a mid-mounted next-generation twin-turbocharged V6, the most powerful EcoBoost engine to date, ‘more than 600hp’ is sent to the rear wheels, though performance figures have yet to be unveiled. Heavy use of carbon fibre and aluminium ensure a lightweight build, while advanced lightweight composites used in the build are expected to help serve Ford’s line-up moving forward.
And help the GT handle well, obviously. Notable elements of the bodykit – a key talking point of the new model – include a deployable rear spoiler and a more angular nose canopy with larger air intakes for improved aerodynamics over the outgoing ’04 model. Said bodywork covers a new rigid chassis and pushrod suspension for improved road holding, while 20in wheels shod with Michelin Pilot Super Sport Cup 2 tyres feature a unique compound and structure designed specifically for the Ford GT for greater levels of grip.
