’88 Porsche 959 ‘Komfort’
There’s little doubting that both the Carrera GT and 918 Spyder had enormous tasks ahead of them to usurp – or even equal – the legendary 959. This was after all not only a Group B rally weapon in the late 1980s but was also at one point the fastest street-legal production car on the planet. Though it offered less visual wallop than the equally as desirable Ferrari F40, the 911 range topper also packed all-wheel drive, adjustable suspension, a 450bhp rear-mounted twin turbo, and as much Le Mans-inspired technologically as Porsche could squeeze between the seams. With a top speed of (197mph) 317kph, the fabled 200mph mark was within reach, and the world stood agog on the 959’s unveil at the ’85 Frankfurt Motor Show.
You can’t help but feel a little sorry that it took Bill Gates 13 years to get his quickly bought coupe out of customs…
