The evening calm of Yas Marina Circuit was broken last night as the 2011-specification Maserati GranTurismo MC Trofeo took to the track for the first time. The race car was being driven by three up and coming drivers from the UAE, Saudi Arabia and the UK in this exclusive test session for potential drivers to the spectacular single-make racing series.
The latest 2011-specification car includes a new aerodynamic package, upgraded performance brakes, revised gearbox software – which allows for gearchanges in just 60milliseconds – plus a significant increase in power from the 4.7-litre V8 engine.
Ex-professional racing driver and FIA GT Champion, David Terrien, was on hand to provide tips and encouragement to the drivers as they found their feet behind the wheel of the 488bhp race car. Each driver was given the opportunity to test the car on the fast and technical North circuit configuration of the Formula One track.
The Maserati Trofeo JBF RAK Middle East is designed to be a high-level, yet hassle-free ‘arrive-and-drive’ racing championship which will appeal to Gentlemen drivers from across the Middle East. The series will take place over six race weekends at renowned circuits across the GCC in the UAE, Bahrain and Qatar with 12 races in total. With full support from the Maserati factory in Italy, the grids for each race will feature 12 mechanically identical Maserati GranTurismo MC Trofeo race cars.
An all-inclusive package is offered to drivers – this covers the use of the car, logistical management, technical assistance, insurance coverage, fuel and tyres, plus VIP Maserati hospitality for the driver and their guests. The series is open to anyone with a passion for cars and motorsport, even if they themselves have never raced before.
Umberto Cini, Managing Director of Maserati Middle East & Africa, is buoyed by the interest the championship has received since its official launch last month. “It was great to see the sensational new car out on track for the first time, and it proves the Maserati GranTursimo MC Trofeo is perfectly suited for racing in the Middle East. Work on the Maserati Trofeo JBF RAK series is progressing fast and events like this test session show that we are well on the way to filling up our starting grid.”
The Maserati Trofeo JBF RAK Middle East is set to debut in November 2011, with races taking place throughout the winter months into early 2012.
