Sadly this past weekend turned into one of hard work, longs hours and heartache.
All was looking good during the early running of the weekend, however after an altercation with one of the GT class cars in practice, chief spanner-merchant Tom Maplethorpe and the rest of the Oryx team had to put long stretch in to get the car prepped and ready to run in quali. Steven Kane hopped into the car midway through the final qualifying session after both the Muscle Milk Aston and the sister Dyson car had popped their times in. Steven put all his skills to the test and hustled the car to within a second of the pole time. The result was P3 on the grid.
So with a great starting spot, the team lead by Emirati Humaid Al Masaood and Steven were targeting a third consecutive podium triumph. However, that was before a combination of ruthless weather (when it rains in Mid Ohio, it rains) and bad luck intervened. Sadly, with 55mins run, the team’s Mazda Lola Coupé was forced to retire after the car snapped sideways under braking for the final chicane and clattered the wall. Happily, Steven, who had just hopped onboard after the first round of pit stops, was fine and dandy, which is all that really counts.
We managed to catch up with team principal Humaid after the race, who told us that after such a positive start to our ALMS career the day was a disappointing one. Humaid reaffirmed that the team want to do this properly and they head on to their next challenge a stronger team.
The teams focus now switches to the legendary Road America circuit at Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin for round seven of the ALMS from 18th August.
