Now we’ve had a chance to really see what the little Toyota Yaris can really do.
Our pocket rocket (well, sort of) took a short trip from C&P Towers to the headquarters of Evo Middle East for a three-car test on a racetrack. This was no ordinary racetrack – a lap of the Dubai Autodrome or Yas Marina in a Yaris would probably be timed in hours. This was a chance to see how well the Yaris – along with a Chevrolet Sonic and Kia Rio – could perform dynamically, to see whether it’s possible to have fun for $15,000. And after an afternoon of wanging all three about, the answer was yes. It is.
Of the three, the Yaris was the least exciting to look at and sit in, but to drive it knocked the other two into a cocked hat. It’s got a sharp throttle, a fizzy, eager little engine and is quite happy to be thrashed about on the tight and twisting track, with plenty of flat out straights, hard braking and mid-corner adjustments on the right-hand pedal.
It stayed the flattest and most composed through the corners of the three and was the one that all of us present agreed would be our pint-sized weapon of choice.
