Regular Evo Middle East readers will be very familiar with their views on the GranTurismo range. Their reaction each time, to generalise, has been ‘love the sound, love the looks, but it’s getting a bit dated’. Can a few tweaks for 2012 make a difference?

This is the 2012 GranTurismo S Automatica, which sits towards the middle of the range, below the hardcore MC Stradale and to the side of the slightly more visceral Cambiocorsa model. This is the GranTurismo with a bit more edge than the standard model, but still designed to err on the side of luxury.

The new model year upgrades play it safe in terms of visuals and at first glance you’d be forgiven for thinking nothing has changed; tweaks are restricted to new colour choices, alloy wheel designs and interior trim options. Sadly the aging sound system remains.

No, under the bonnet is where the tweaks have taken place, specifically in the gearbox. Although it’s an option, most cars in the Middle East will be specified with the MC Auto Shift, which means 50 percent faster gear changes in Sport mode than before. The box is still a regular ZF automatic, rather than the robotised manual transmission found in the S Cambiocorsa or MC Stradale, but it’s been given a spruce up for increased sportiness. Downshifts are now accompanied by an automatic blip of the throttle and manual mode really means manual – there are no automatic downshifts and you can bounce the 4.7-litre V8 engine off the rev limiter if you so desire, without the car shifting gears for you.
