The SLS has proven ridiculously popular since it first appeared on the scene. Yeah yeah, power, handling and a whacking great V8. What really got the heart palpitating were those gullwings.
The same was true 58 years ago. The straight-six 3.0l engine powering the original Mercedes 300SL brought with it a top speed of 260kph, and made the Merc the fastest production car in the world at that time. Then the doors opened at the 1954 New York Auto Show to a stunned audience.
Legacy born. Job done.
