Rather appropriately, this particular shot is entitled ‘The Vault’. Since the Veyron came along, Bugatti has been keen to keep memories its previous supercar production run under lock and key.
Everything seemed promising enough to start off with. The EB110 SS – dedicated to Bugatti founder Ettore 110 years after his birth – was powered by a 3.5l quad-turbo V12, kicked out 603hp, sprinted from 0-100kph in 3.2s and topped a neck snapping 348kph.
But Bugatti’s bankruptcy in 1995 following an ambitious attempt to purchase Lotus – plus Michael Schumacher’s high-profile traffic collision during the same year, the blame for which he laid on the EB110’s braking system – was enough to punt the 139 finished models out of the spotlight.
