This is the first time I’ve conducted an interview from the passenger seat of a Lamborghini. It’s generally not that different, except for one or two subtle points. Firstly, given the uncompromising hold of the sport seats, I’m actually facing away from my interviewee, which is usually something of a ‘no no’. Secondly, the V12 rumble now emanating around Dubai Marina means every so often my questions are drowned out completely.
And thirdly, crankandpiston interviews don’t tend to attract this much attention. We only parked up in the Murciélago a few minutes ago and several wide-eyed gentlemen have already wandered across for a closer look and some iPhone shots. To owner Clive De Wilfred though, it’s just another normal day.

Making sure the two-seater is in neutral, Clive feathers the right pedal a couple of times. Cue the almost apocalyptic sound of all those horses snorting in unison, and the wild applause of our newfound friends on the other side of the windscreen. They’re clearly loving this just as much as Clive.

And that’s the whole idea. Nothing about this turquoise (yep, turquoise!) Murciélago comes close to being subtle or understated: the low, low stance; the menacing glare from the headlights; the scissor doors; the enormous rear wing. Everything is designed to be outlandish and showy, and that’s exactly what attracted Clive to Lamborghini in the first place.

“This is a car I daren’t push. I’m lucky in the Middle East in that I can take it onto the track, which is where you can really see what a car like this is capable of. But it’s not an easy car to drive. It’s very tail happy. It’s still very grounded with the four-wheel drive, but there’s so much power that you don’t have time to correct if anything goes. So when it spins, it really spins! It’s very direct and poised, but absolutely merciless.”

So, we have the speed, we have the precision, and we have the lunacy. Clearly, what we have then is a track-day car which is rolled out every so often for a quick blast and to show off to the neighbours. You most certainly would not take the Lamborghini for the weekly shopping. Turns out I’m completely wrong though: “I actually drive this car every day. Even just down to the supermarket and back!”

You can imagine my surprise, and (yes, I’ll admit it) cynicism at this. The Lamborghini is not what you’d call ‘practical’. As I sit here, held (there’s no other word) by the passenger bucket, visibility through the windscreen is – let ‘s say – ‘challenging’, elbow room is at a premium, and the lack of storage in the centre console means I’ve had to move Clive’s phone and wallet from the passenger seat just to get in. Hardly your everyday commuter then. But to Clive, it’s all part of the charm.

“This might sound strange, but I love this car because it’s not a perfect car. The driving position is completely wrong: every time I steer left, I end up knocking my knee against the indicator spindle. The pedals are in completely the wrong place, and ridiculously close together. The steering is rock hard, you can’t use a Bluetooth headset because the engine drowns it out, and it didn’t even come with air conditioning! The clearance level is pretty weak too, because of the front splitter. I get less than an inch, so there’s a lot of public car parks I can’t go to. I can’t even drive to work!
