Giving the mighty Ford SVT Raptor a proper drive out was an exercise we’d been wanting to do for the last couple of years, yet for a multitude of reasons it just never happened. Thankfully though, last week a few calls were exchanged between ourselves and Ford, followed by a call to say the Raptor was downstairs ready for us. What ensued was a fight between the team and a mad rush down to the car park. “Shotgun!”

In the end, the keys were mine and a plan was being laid out.With the geography and off-road routes at our disposal across the UAE, it wasn’t ever going to be tricky to pull off something cool. Along with crankandpiston mate of old – Laurie Bridger – bags were packed, the route laid into the GPS system, and the tanks filled. Time to get rocking.

Yet the capability of the Raptor over and above the F-150 are on another planet. We think it’s more than fair to say that the Ford Raptor is one of the most unique and capable trucks on the market and maybe even ever made. It’s that good. To emphasise that point and understand whether there were any weak points, we first pointed ourselves at the gorgeous UAE mountains. Yes, we know the Raptor is a boss on the sands, but can it handle technical rocky passes? To add some extra flavour and let the Ford feel more comfortable, a proper desert hack was on the agenda for later in the day.

It’s certainly an imposing beast, with its blistered bodywork hardly covering the aggressive stance, rally raid-spec suspension specially engineered by Fox Racing and Ford themselves and of course the mighty slabs of rubber in each corner. Hacking the fire trails at high speed is where the Raptor loves to be.

Ford will happily admit that a huge amount of time, effort and $$s went into taking the ‘run of the mill’ F-150 and turning it into Raptor. After a bit of digging through the press information, we found that Ford had gone to the crazy lengths of constructing a 100kms durability/testing loop just outside Borrego Springs in California specifically to simulate life on the demanding and epic Baja 1000. As we start to open the taps, we can certainly attest to the work that’s gone into it.

While we are talking about $$ investment and the boingy bits making this mountain hack such a pleasure, it’s worth focusing on the trump cards too. The Raptor has been thoroughly re-worked and features 12.1 inches of usable wheel travel in the rear and 11.2 in the front in addition to industry-exclusive internal bypass shocks. Supplied by Fox Racing, the shocks feature high-altitude commercial jet-style fluid and an internal bypass system to stiffen the shock as it travels to prevent bottoming out. Bosh!
