I know we have featured a couple of Porsches the last few days here on crankandpiston, however there are no apologies for this one. Shot by our own Luke Ray for his killer magazine ‘Fuel’, I think you will agree that not only are the pictures superb, it is undeniably a Killer car!
The simplicity and purity of the Porsche 356 design mixed in with subtle “outlaw” hotrod design cues makes for an enviable ride.

You would never believe looking at pictures like this that when Mark Banks got ahold of the car it was in a bad way. Despite spending its early years in the dry climate of California the floors were shot, the battery box was gone, wings rusted through and even the bottoms of the doors had seen better days…

Cruising ominously through the show ground – I just love the rear view of a 356. Especially one as cool as this!
What you can’t tell from this pic and a fact that I have failed to highlight is that the original Flat4 1600cc Porsche 356 motor was junked in favour of a monster Type1 Volkswagen (think VW Beetle) powerhouse with a displacement of 2400cc. Big carbs and a modified Porsche 911 upright cooling fan also adorn the engine bay. You can bet that with upwards of 200hp and the super light bodywork of the 356 this little hot rod will hustle.

The workmanship and look of this “outlaw” is absolutly spot on. I get the feeling that if the boys at Porsche in the 50’s had been given free reign when building the first 356’s they might have come up with something similar to this.
Sadly it’s cars like this that we miss in the UAE…I know there are some cool bits of machinery hidden away in people’s private collections but why they never see the light of day is beyond me.
