The long road of re-building the Crankandpiston GTI race car keeps on winding and thanks to the incredible work of Jarkko Sutinen and his team, the truck is rolling at a fair old lick. I know I have been posting pics up in dribs and drabs and those that know the car might have seen it posted on a couple of forums out there on the interweb. However I thought it would be nice to go a little bit further into detail and get a an idea of what Jarkko and his gang and the rest of Axis Engineering are up to at the moment.

Ok, first up! The over all theme of the car was wide, low and evil looking with a DTM twist. I probably should have followed the, “if it ain’t broke, then don’t fix it” mentality after the reasonable success that we had last year. The car was quick considering it was 90% stock in the drive train department and proved super reliable when I didn’t intelligently suggest that we make some changes mid season!
So then..why the change? Well for some reason I had a burning desire to make the GTI evil and very very wide. Long story short, this desire this led to me to a man that led me to a man that led me to Jarkko. The overall theme that was discussed and very quickly finalised on was to be full on!…Front splitter, rear diffuser, wide wings and a couple of other bits full on! It is only a mock up at the moment but the work that has gone into items such as the rear diffuser and the front splitter is incredible.

As mentioned above, the plan was always to go wide…so again Jarkko and his team have come up trumps with some very cool and excellent quality wings for the GTI – Having to hide 9.5 inch wheels all round was the main drive when it came to this choice.

Jarkko sent this picture over to me a couple of nights ago and it knocked me off my seat. The first moulded rear wing has been mocked up and fitted into place. The design and the fabrication work really stands when you see stuff like this!

Here is another shot of the front wings – This time you can see the slats that Jarkko suggested to help release the pressure build up of air in the wheel well…not only that – it looks mean.

Axis Engineering – where the magic is happening. If you have the need for any fabrication work I can recommend that you hop in your car/SUV/rig and shoot down to see them.
More to come in the coming weeks…
