Unfortunately, we missed out on witnessing this one in person. Though I did get a late night SMS from a friend on Thursday telling me that he’d heard a rumour it might be happening, as I’d spent all day at the Autodrome and had a full day at the track ahead of me I didn’t follow up on it. More fool me.

Red Bull Racing had got the nod to close off one side of Shiekh Zayed Road from the Dusit down the the Trade Centre. They then proceeded to run up and down the main Dubai drag, clocking a top speed of 297kph. Neel Jani was the lucky man behind the wheel.

But more interesting for us was the fact that a certain James Burnett from the Dubai Autodrome was running ahead of the car in an R8 V10 Coupe. According to James, he managed to crack 300kph – it’ll be interesting to see if any of the numerous speed cameras were switched on…

    Unfortunately for Red Bull, the road was closed about 5 minutes after the alloted time and opened almost 10 minutes early for reasons presumably only those in high places will ever know.

    This limited their ability to get the clean runs they wanted – I was manning an extinguisher at the turnaround point under the DWTC Metro walkway and had probably the best view in the house. James is in the clear – I didn’t see any flashes and his return run would make for some interesting photos anyway – going the wrong way with no oncoming traffic 😉

    There were two funny moments worth re-telling. At one point a very flustered looking organiser turned to one of the photographers and said “Will you PLEASE take some pictures right now because this car’s leaving the pit area ANY second”. Looking up at the car the photog grinned, carried on carefully changing his lens and simply said “You might want to put some wheels on it first……”

    The second was heard on the radio

    “Yes Mike can you confirm the the Go-Pros are fully functional”
    “Say again please”
    Yes can you confirm the Go-Pros are in place and operated correctly”
    “Sorry the what”
    “The Go-Pros, are they…….Oh for……..the little cameras on the car – did they work OK?”
