[Not a valid template]Organisers of the prestigious Mille Miglia have announced the dates for the 2014 running of the historic rally.
The Mille Miglia – an event that first took place in 1927 and was last run as an official rally in 1957 – will tale place from 15-18 May next year. The rally brings together the finest examples of pre-war machinery and habitually includes examples from Aston Martin, Alfa Romeo, Ferrari and Mercedes-Benz among others in the four-day event across Italy. It is an event famously lauded by Enzo Ferrari, who described the Mille Miglia as ‘the world’s most beautiful race’.
Key changes to the event include a one-day extension, the 2013 Mille Miglia event – on which crankandpiston.com competed with Jaguar – having lasted three days. Drivers will leave Brescia on Thursday (day one), making their way through Vicenza, Marostica, Bassano del Grappa and Thermae Abano Montegrotto during the subsequent hours.
On the second day, drivers will hit San Marino, head south to Riccione (foregoing the traditional inland route), Loreto, and L’Aquila towards Rome before journeying to Bologna on the third day via Ronciglione, Viterbo, Radicofani and Siena in the north, and Volterra and Lucca Pisa in the east, a journey that includes traversing the Futa Pass and the Raticosa Pass. Competitors will finish the 2014 Mille Miglia in Brescia on Sunday evening, having travelled through Modena, Reggio Emilia and Mantova, birthplace of arguably the greatest pre-war Grand Prix driver Tazio Nuvolari.
Entry lists have yet to be released. Last year, noted luminaries Andy Wallace, 1988 24 Hours of Le Mans winner; Alex Buncombe, British GT Championship winner and Nissan GT Academy pro driver; the monkey Chris Harris; Daniel Day Lewis, three-time Academy Award winner; and Yasmin Le Bon, fashion icon and wife of Duran Duran’s lead singer Simon.
