A few years ago, car journalists used to frequently mention a term in the their articles: horsepower wars. Initially staged between the BMW and Mercedes’ performance divisions, numerous references were made to the muscle car era. Well the muscle cars are back with a bang, and they are packing more horses than ever. Those poor rear tyres…actually, its burnout time!

(Cue announcer’s voice) Introducing the new 2015 Dodge Challenger Hellcat. The most powerful muscle car ever. Full stop.

With a massive supercharged 6.2 liter V8 engine under the hood, this car, nay, this monster produces 707hp and 650 lb-ft of torque. If that doesn’t have you interested ladies and gents, well, you’re just not a fan of muscle cars.

To alleviate any worries that an owner may have when giving a less experienced driver the key, Dodge has borrowed a concept that was first shown on the early Corvette ZR1. The car comes with two keys, one red and one black.  The black one limits the car to 500hp while the red one unleashes the Cat from Hell with its full 707hp.

Additionally, the car has been fully re-engineered and redesigned, with new technology taking over a number of areas of the car. Transmission has also been upgraded to handle all the power, with a Torqueflite eight speed automatic sealing the deal. The interior has also taken design cues from the 1971 Challenger.

New specs have been released for the regular Challenger as well, with the SXT retaining its Pentastar V6, the R/T getting the new Troqueflite transmission, while the new SRT8 – or Scat Pack as it is now called – gets an all new 6.4-litre HEMI engine.

The new Challenger will be in showrooms during the third quarter of 2014.
