Last month we brought you news of Mercedes-Benz’s answer to the BMW X6, the GLE. Now, at the Detroit Motor Show, it’s produced a foil to the super-fast X6 M, and this is it – the GLE 63 AMG. Or rather, to give its official title, the Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 Coupé – note the slight tweak to the nomenclature compared to past models.

Powered by AMG’s 5.5-litre, biturbo V8, the GLE 63 comes in two variants. The standard car has a measly 550bhp, while the S-Model ups the output to 577bhp. Because let’s face it, 550bhp is never enough.

Keeping all that grunt usable is an uprated suspension system with active roll stabilisation, connected to an all-wheel drive system with a rear-biased power distribution. The transmission is the dual-clutch AMG Speedshift Plus 7G-Tronic. The net result is a car that accelerates to 100kph in 4.3 or 4.2 seconds, depending on which model you go for. Top speeds are limited to 250kph.

Expect to see the GLE 63 Coupé go on sale around the world towards the second half of 2015.
