We’re still waiting for full details and pics of Lamborghini’s Murcielago replacement, but the Italian manufacturer is being rather coy.

The latest flash of automotive ankle designed to arouse our interest are these shots of the new 700 bhp, V12-powered sports car’s suspension, which is properly hardcore. It’s a pushrod system, lifted straight from the world of race cars and comprising an aluminium double wishbone set up inspired by Formula 1. The springs and dampers are connected to the bodyshell structure rather than the wheel mounts and are positioned transversely, under the windscreen at the front and near the engine at the back. Forces from the wheels are transferred from the wheel mounts to the springs and dampers by pushrods and relay levers and rockers.

The benefits to such a system are race-car like responsiveness and quick reaction from the springs and dampers due to their rigid connection to the chassis. Lamborghini will certainly fit softer springs than race cars to increase comfort, but precision won’t be adversely affected.

The press release accompanying the above picture included other details about the new car. It’ll be very light, made mainly from aluminium and carbon fibre and have hydraulic steering with three adjustable servo settings, including an ultra-sharp corsa (race) mode.

Other confirmed features include a carbon-ceramic brake system with massive 400mm discs and six-pot callipers at the front and 380mm discs and four-pot callipers at the back. The front brakes will hide behind 19-inch wheels wearing 255/35 tyres and the rears will be housed in 20-inch rims on 335/30 rubber. There’ll be an electric parking brake and a hydraulic lifting system at the front of the car, lifting it by 40mm to get over speed bumps.

We’ll get to see the as-yet-unnamed car in the metal at the Geneva Motor Show in March.
