Over the past few years VW have been in Giant killing mode. Cast your mind back to when they rolled up at the Nurburgring 24hrs with a very subtle looking silver Mk5 Golf GTi. Nobody batted an eye lid then and they seemed to miss it as it cruised up the pack and deep into the top 15..now we are talking about a grid of 150+ cars here and full factory spec GT3 monsters up front. So top 15 – it’s pretty darned good.

Then to celebrate the launch of the Scirocco they did it again. This time though the car looked a bit more evil and with a collection of celebrated drivers, they again popped the car on the podium in class and pushed it right up the massive field. Not bad for a 2.0T car based on a Golf?!

Now they are at it again. So, in honor of the 35th Anniversary of the GTI, VW have decided to inject the Golf with a faintly ridiculous 440hp..Big HP from a 2.0T I hear you say?! Well thankfully the motor that we rated as THE engine of the last few years has found a home in the front. So in goes the 2.5-litre five-cylinder turbo engine, AWD and a six-speed gearbox with paddle shifting.

Looks and sounds mental and will surely be competitive. Step 3 in the giant killing process then! Here is holding out for the road version with that engine!
