In what proved to be an action-packed hour of motorsport, Robert Cregan put on an excellent performance at Yas Marina resulting in him continuing his strong lead in the GTC class of the UAE GT Championship.

After starting first in class, the 22-year old Irishman drove extremely well for the first portion of the race keeping his competitors at bay before the coming in for his mandatory pit stop at the half-way point. With an additional 30 seconds of success penalty to be served, Cregan was hoping his efforts in the early stages of the race would allow him to finish on top.

Fortunately for Cregan, his closest competition in the form of Joe Ghanem driving the Ginetta G50 made contact with another car in the first lap and had to retire from the race. However, the KTM X-Bow of Saad Salman proved to be too quick around the technical Marina section of the Yas Marina circuit for Cregan to overtake. The Maserati GranTurismo MC Trofeo finished just 2 seconds behind the KTM at the fall of the chequered flag, but the result gives Cregan valuable points in the overall driver’s championship.

Speaking after collecting his trophy, Robert Cregan had this to say of his performance. ‘Overall, it was pretty good. Before the race, I said I would have been happy with a top two finish, but now I’m pretty disappointed that I didn’t win. I definitely had the speed to win, but the tyres couldn’t last for the whole race. I was pushing very hard to get a good lead at the start before the pit stop so I wouldn’t have to catch up again, but in the end the tyres couldn’t last.’

‘Around the Yas Hotel and through the corkscrew section the KTM was really fast, and even on the straights the KTM was pretty quick and I wasn’t gaining on him as much as I would have liked.’
‘I can’t complain about second place, I don’t think the other guys in the running for the championship lead had a very good day, so it’s good overall for the championship.’

‘At turn 1 I got a great start, at the lights I went straight through the middle of the pack, then hit the brakes and locked up and narrowly missed the back of the Khaleji Ferrari in front of me. I knew the guys in the Ginettas were behind me and would be eager to try and get past me, and just as I was turning into turn 10 in front of the South Grandstand I felt a big bang from the back. It turned out to be Khaled Al Mudhaf’s Ginetta – I half spun on the corner, and ended up completing the race on D-shaped tyres and with a damaged car. But I’m very happy that I finished.’
