*NOW UPDATED WITH VIDEO* Volkswagen’s new entry-level SUV has been revealed at the Geneva motor show.
[Not a valid template]Volkswagen has debuted the all-new T-Cross Breeze SUV at this month’s Geneva Motor Show with which the company hopes to rival the Nissan Juke, Renault Captur and Mazda CX-3.
The new T-Cross is built on Volkswagen’s MQB based platform and is said to be powered by a new turbocharged 110bhp 1-litre three-cylinder, enough for the 1250kg concept to hit a modest 0-100kph time of 10.3 seconds and a 188kph top speed. Having been built on the same base as the sixth generation Polo, the turbocharged three-cylinder is expected to power the new generation as well. Additional engine options and full technical specifications for the T-Cross are expected to be revealed soon, although power and torque from each engine is expected to be sent to the front wheels via a seven-speed dual-shift automatic gearbox.
Although similar in size to the VW Golf, design cues for the T-Cross have been heavily influenced by the T-ROC concept SUV that first appeared at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show including its wide grille, flanks and large wheel arches. The front meanwhile features new large, square, LED daytime running lights, while the cabin boasts the latest incarnation of VW”s virtual cockpit, which incorporates a high-resolution screen in place of the standard instrument panel and touch-sensitive surfaces in place of buttons.
At present, Volkswagen has neither confirmed nor denied any production plans for the T-Cross Breeze or indeed of offering an industry rival to the new Range Rover Evoque convertible. It’s even been suggested that should the T-Cross make production, it will do so as a hardtop and as a four-door counterpart to its conceptual alter-ego.
