Top 10 Formula 1 Season Openers

The 2016 Formula 1 season kicks off this weekend, and to prepare for the first race in Australia we’ve been looking back at the opening events from previous seasons. Here, in chronological order, are our favourites.

1. Britain, 1950 – The Beginning

This was where the modern era of grand prix racing began – the very first Formula 1 World Driver’s Championship event was the British Grand Prix at Silverstone. The event saw the finest drivers and machines of the day gather in front of a huge crowd that included the British King and Queen. Alfa Romeo dominated with Nino Farina and Juan Manuel Fangio duelling for the lead until Fangio retired. Farina therefore became the first F1 race winner and went on to win the inaugural World Championship.
