What cars would you like to see race at the 24 Hours of Le Mans? The team at CarWoW highlights 10 of its favourites with some seriously cool renders.

If you’re anything like us, you’ll have spent the run-up to the 84th 24 Hours of Le Mans pondering the question, ‘Audi or Porsche for the win’? And it turns out, we’ve missed a trick. Given that the Ford GT makes its return to Le Mans this year alongside Porsche 911s, Ferrari 458s and Chevrolet Corvettes, the guys at CarWow have been wondering what other cars they would like to see race at Le Mans one day. And not only have they been thinking about it, they’ve come up with a few renders too.

This is an insanely cool idea, and more than a couple have caught our eye, including the Ford Mustang and the Porsche 918, the latter decked out in that gorgeous Martini livery that helped bring the Williams F1 Team back from the dead (plus the traditional Gulf Racing colours in another image). Why on earth wouldn’t we want to see Porsche’s first supercar since the Carrera GT compete in the most famous endurance race on the planet? Sharing the same hybrid technology as last year’s World Endurance Championship winning 919 LMP1 prototype, the 875bhp green brute would prove a phenomenal sight down the Mulsanne Straight and through the Porsche Curves. Ditto the all-new Mustang, now a genuine sports car much to the chagrin of muscle car fans the world over. Complete with new front splitter, rear diffuser and spoiler, EcoBoost four-cylinder and Chip Ganassi livery, a Mustang at Le Mans could well be among the coolest cars the event has ever seen.

Fortunately Britain is well represented too, much to the delight of the largely expat-heavy team at crankandpiston.com. For as long as we can remember, Aston Martin has competed at Le Mans with the V8 Vantage GTE, a dominant class win in 2014 among the highlights. Perhaps though it’s time for a change, and while the new twin-turbocharged V12 is unlikely to pass WEC muster, Aston’s first new halo sports car in 13 years – the brand new DB11 – seems an ideal starting point. Similarly Jaguar, now back in frontline (ahem) motorsport with a Formula E championship in 2016 might soon be champing at the bit for its eighth win at Le Mans. What better starting point than its new flagship sport scar – the F-TYPE – and the Silk Cut livery that’s been scientifically proven to add 20kph onto any car’s top speed, even despite the horribly illegal tobacco sponsorship.

Though the Audi RS7, BMW i8, McLaren 675LT and even the Bentley EXP10 concept are all ridiculously cool ideas, we’re reserving our final thoughts for the ‘Garage 56’ Morgan. It’s pretty much impossible not to love this design, which includes not only a side-mounted flame-spitting exhaust turret, whopping great front slicks, and the prospect of open cockpit racing once again at Le Mans, but also a 3.8-litre twin-turbo V6 from a Nissan GT-R hanging over the front axle of this 3 Wheeler. Garage 56 has seem some strange sights over the years at La Sarthe, but we doubt any of them would look – and sound – better than this one.
