Open-top Aston Martin Vanquish Zagato Volante lands at Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, with just 99 to be made. For $655,000 apiece.
[Not a valid template]Now there’s both good news and bad news for this particular Aston Martin piece. The good news is that fans of the recent Vanquish Zagato concept will probably drop to their knees and weep at the sight of this simply stunning Vanquish Zagato Volante. The bad news is that just 99 will be built and sold for $655K a pop. We realise that’s not quite Lamborghini Centenario Roadster levels of lunacy, but we’re still deep into ‘ouch’ territory here.
The latest collaboration with the Italian coachbuilder, the Vanquish Zagato Volante is the result of, what Aston calls, ‘overwhelming customer interest’ in its hardtop counterpart. Unsurprisingly, the dimensions between Zagato Volante and Coupe remain pretty much indivisible. Signature design cues have also made their way across, hence the open-top model features the CC100-esque carbon fibre side strakes, quad exhausts and Vulcan-inspired LED headlights. Inside also boasts the same herringbone carbon-fibre and anodized bronze detailing, as well as ‘Z’ icon embossed on the headrests and centre console.
Twin cowls behind the seats conceal a folding metal roof and utilise the same mechanics as a standard Vanquish Volante. By the way, did we mention you can read our Aston vs Ferrari California article HERE…?
Propulsion comes from the same naturally aspirated V12, albeit with 592bhp versus the standard Vanquish Volante’s 565bhp. Tweaks – if any – to the 457lb ft torque figures remain unknown, although the Vanquish Zagato Volante will still decimate 0-100kph in a ‘projected’ 3.7 seconds.
Both the Vanquish Zagato Volante and coupe join an illustrious list of Aston Martin / Zagato designs, the first – DB4 GT Zagato – having made its debut in 1960. Hard top collaborations include the DB7 Vantage Zagato (2002) and V12 Vantage Zagato (2011), though the first convertible model appeared in 1987: the V8 Vantage Volante. In 2003, the DB7-bodied DB AR1 was developed specifically for the North American market, again limited to 99 units.
