A five-part TV series on Top Fuel drag racing in the USA has made its world debut on Abu Dhabi Sports. “Life in the Fast Lane” follows the Yas Marina Circuit Top Fuel driver Hot Rod Fuller and his team as they compete with the world’s best drag racers at four leading races in the United States last summer.
Sponsored by the Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority, the team took one of the Yas Top Fuel cars to the US to help promote Abu Dhabi as a destination for American tourists and explore opportunities to race a fuller season in 2011 and 2012. A TV crew travelled with them to record the highs and lows, offering exclusive behind-the-scenes insights into the high-octane world of Top Fuel drag racing.
The series tells the story of how Fuller (a seven-times Top Fuel winner) and his former crew chief Lee Beard teamed up to take on the top teams in US drag racing. It covers the anxiety, frustration, excitement and sheer hard work that goes into sending a Top Fuel car down a drag strip in less than four seconds. The TV series features actual race footage from the four race weekends and shows the carnival atmosphere of a typical US drag meeting, with crowds ranging from 40,000 to 120,000. The races are from Sonoma, California; Denver, Colorado; Indianapolis, Indiana; and Charlotte, North Carolina.
Rashed Al Qubaisi, Head of the Yas Drag Racing Centre, helped manage the tour alongside Faisal Al Sahlawi from the Yas commercial department, who represented the ADTA’s interests. “The tour was a great success from many standpoints,” Al Qubaisi said. “Rod qualified third-fastest in the first event at Sonoma, California, and served notice that we were serious competitors from the very start. We had some wonderful results, and everywhere we went we flew the flag for Abu Dhabi and the UAE before a huge US TV audience.”
Fuller says the TV documentary is essential viewing for drag racing fans in the UAE. “I’ve seen the whole series and it really captures the essence of an American drag racing weekend,” he said. “You get the full flavour of the atmosphere as the fans wander around the paddock, the pit crews race to rebuild engines in record time, and the excitement of the races themselves. Episode 1 was shown last weekend but the next four episodes are well worth watching.”
The US drag tour brought back together one of the most successful Top Fuel drivers and one of the best crew chiefs in the National Hot Rod Association. Hot Rod Fuller, a former World Super Comp Champion, has seven career Top Fuel wins in 18 final rounds and 13 career wins in the Super Comp and Gas classes. He has recorded seven pole positions and finished second in the 2007 NHRA Top Fuel standings, winning three races in six final rounds. Lee Beard was the crew chief who tuned Fuller to the win at the Memphis race in 2005. He has tuned 10 different drivers to 53 NHRA wins in the Top Fuel and Funny Car categories and his drivers have earned 60 No. 1 qualifying awards.
