You’ve worked for some major teams aside from Ferrari in F1. Tyrrell is a significant name, BAR, and even a short spell with Lotus. Then there was your year with Toyota, which didn’t go very well…
“(Pause) In the end, it wasn’t so different. At Toyota it was difficult finding the right person to talk to. At Ferrari I know who the right person is, so it makes setting up the car a lot easier if you know who you’re dealing with. At Toyota, that person was impossible to find.
“But at the end of the day, it’s not a big deal. It’s the passion at Ferrari that makes them stand out and it’s drives them on.”

After you retired from F1, you competed in Champ Cars with Jimmy Vasser’s KV Racing outfit. You even scored a podium in your second ever race in Miami. How did the two disciplines differ?
“Oh they’re completely different. It was a completely new style of racing to me. No tyre warmers and flying starts, and all this. It all happened so quickly for me that I didn’t have a test at all, and just went straight into the first race [at Denver, where Mika finished 14th].
“I liked the racing though. I like street courses a lot, and Champ Car was doing a lot of street courses back then. And they were really strong cars. You could make contact with little damage, unlike F1.”

You’re in a position now where you can look back on series you’ve raced in and see how things have changed. How has F1 changed, through your eyes, since you left?
“Formula One has changed a lot. There’s no more testing, so it actually looks easier! The drivers only race, and then don’t test, so from a driving point of view it’s easier. During my last days of F1, we were racing, testing for four days during the week, then back to racing. So I never had a break, and it was really hard!
“Actually I was talking with Michael [Schumacher] last summer and he said it’s not so hard anymore. There’s less power in the engines, and the grip is different. Things have certainly changed a lot since my time, for sure.”

Do you still keep up with a lot of guys from the series aside from Michael?
“Yes I do. I’ve been a steward at a couple of the races, and I did last year’s race at Valencia. I’ve actually just received a few emails from Charlie [Whiting, FIA F1 Race Director] to see if there are any races I’d like to do this year. I’m not too sure yet because I do a bit of television work with Finnish TV, so I need to see if I can balance it all out. Plus I still want to do some races.
“I’m taking big bites out of everything! Sometimes I just want to stay home, but jobs keep coming up. So we’ll see.”

You’ve raced at some of the most famous circuits on the planet, but are there any goals you’d still like to achieve?
“I haven’t driven at Daytona, and I’d really like to compete there one day. I’ve done Le Mans and Spa and won both of them (winning at Le Mans in 2008-09, and the Spa 24hrs in 2006). I didn’t win the Dubai 24hrs but maybe someday. Who knows?
“It’s basically just trying something new. I like trying different things. Last year I did V8 Supercars in Australia and won there too (in the second race at Surfers Paradise with Will Davison for Ford Performance Racing)! So it’s great, I can still compete at the front, and if there’s a race I’m interested in I’ll go. If I don’t like the look of it, I won’t.”
