The operation itself went well, but the recuperation period lasted just over six weeks. Barred from unnecessary physical exertion by his doctors, the normally active Abdulaziz suddenly found himself at an insufferable loose end
“It was really boring! The doctors said don’t do anything for six weeks: not even running or swimming, nothing. It was frustrating but I knew it was for the best, and it’s better to wait than be sorry. So I tried to occupy myself with video games – I played a lot of Gran Turismo! – or something exciting to take my head out of the situation. Just to get some adrenaline.
“When the doctor said I was okay, I had to get back into shape. I had lost 6kg of weight because I was on liquids for three weeks, so it really affected my health. Since then I’ve gone back to my normal training and I’m feeling a lot stronger. It feels good to be doing that again!”
Now back home in Saudi Arabia, Abdulaziz is raring to jump behind the wheel again. That’s not to say he has forgotten the important things – and people – in his life.
“When I’m home I like to spend a lot of time with the family, and with my sisters and brothers. I don’t get to see them that much during the year. We like to go to the beach and I play a lot of football with my brothers. But I also manage some of the family business, so I go to the office in the morning, and then do training in the afternoon.”
