Tap the drive mode twice to leap into Sport mode – which you will notice tangibly through the seat – and bring the paddle shift gearbox into play (linked to an eight-speed automatic transmission, just FYI), and there’s now a harder edge to the comfort. Steering heft is weighty throughout each turn, there’s barely a gap between gear changes and a lack of bodyroll makes the new coupe a surprisingly lairy cruiser. Flick the left wrist twice and throw in some opposite lock, and the rear wheels will even step out. Don’t expect track-ready levels of poise and balance though. This is still an executive model, complete with the customary bells and whistles like satnav and cruise control associated with relaxed driving. Hit a corner at ‘ambitious’ speed and there’s only so much the 20” alloys at the front can handle. In the new Gran Coupé, it’s important to find the balance.

And therein lies a potential issue. Though the new four-door 6 Series offers both comfort and sportiness, mid-range between the two seems to be the area in which the car feels most at ease. Travelling in Comfort Plus for example, the ride could still be a little too hard for some people, especially across long distances. Widened C-Pillars and a short back window mean rear visibility can make driving in heavy traffic somewhat hair-raising, and though the long bonnet may look magnificent, from behind the wheel it’s difficult to find the front: approach a tight-parking space and – even though the system recommends you not to – you may find yourself relying on the in-built parking assist camera system to ensure you don’t clout another car.

This sense of alienation from the front wheels continues through to dynamic driving. Power and balance are both in abundance, and when energetically thrown at the landscape the coupe will prove easy to control and maneourve. But feel for the road is a little vague and even though the drive aspires to being ‘nimble’, the size of the coupe itself makes this difficult. And that’s a shame.

Magic Hour is just a few minutes away, and under softer natural light the 6 Series Gran Coupé is certainly a handsome devil. Jump behind the wheel and you’ll receive your fair share of chuckles. In contrast, put your sensible cap on and you’ll find the new model a comfy place to while away an afternoon. Rather like this photo shoot though, it may take you a while to find the sweet spot.
