The BMW i8 turns heads wherever it goes. But this one could break a few necks as it passes by. This is the BMW i8 Futurism Edition, special edition model created by BMW Italy and Garage Italia Customs, celebrating 50 years of BMW history in Italy.
It’s a one-off artwork based on Lampada ad Arco (Street Light) by Giacomo Balla, an 1909 artwork that hangs at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. The original piece represents a street lamp, powered by electricity, under moonlight – an apt image for one of the most hailed electric cars yet created. As if that weren’t cool enough, the snazziest i8 yet will also run in this month’s Mille Miglia.
Milan-based Garage Italia Customs is more than just a mod-shop. The team created the Tailor Made bespoke service for Ferrari, and specialise in wraps, paint and interiors. It was launched last year by Lapo Elkann, scion of Fiat’s Agnelli family.
“The BMW i8 Futurism Edition is a practice of style,” Elkann said. “It gave the Garage Italia Customs Maestros a chance to celebrate a car which is projected towards the future of mobility. At the same time, it honours Italian art with Giacomo Balla, who is a prominent figure of the Futurism movement.”
