The prospect of compiling a book showcasing nearly eighty years –worth of BMW cars is daunting enough, but doing so without relying on stock photography and bringing the reader right into the driver’s seat of each is frankly herculean.
But that’s exactly what author Jeremy Walton has done with BMW Ultimate Drives. A labour of love, the hardback was originally designed to be just a single volume until copious amounts of research and inspiring photography from William Taylor gave the publishers two options: cut the 80,000+ word content down, or commission a second book. It was a landslide victory for option two.
Volume One focuses on 1937 to 1982, and don’t just think this is a celebration of BMWs only seen on the roads. Walton and Taylor have also tracked down some of the most exclusive nay expensive examples ever to roll off the Bavarian production line.
Those of you hoping to see Elvis Presley’s 1950s 507 alongside a 3200CS and a bit of 3.0l CSL motorsport heritage thrown in for good measure for under $70 may want to take note.
Plus, for those of you with a suitably supported coffee table will be pleased to hear that an exclusive Publisher’s Edition of Volume One is also available. Just 100 copies will be produced, all numbered and signed by Walton, and could be yours for a slightly more wallet straining $295. That includes the BMW roundel too, by the way.
