Before the cars even got on track, it was obvious these guys were serious about drifting: the LS3 transplant in a Nissan S14 looked like a snug fit. As the drivers lined their cars up and finished last minute adjustments, this gave me just enough time to run down to the first corner. En-route, I wondered if any actual skill would be demonstrated tonight. The answer: yes. Hell yes! Samar Khada in the primer-grey S13 proved that point instantly.

The track layout required the drivers to leave the pits at maximum attack and immediately unbalance the car in preparation for turn one. Mohammed Almuhairbi, lighting the tyres up like a pro, carried massive speed into each and every corner.

Abdullah Alhaddad in his 350Z deserves a special mention. Not only was he one of the neatest drivers on the day, he was also raising awareness for ‘Cancer Cure’, running the charity’s sponsorship on his car. Drifters with a conscience? I clearly need to adjust my preconceptions of these guys.

Salman Mahmood (AKA The Drift King) had the most immaculate drift car I have ever seen. His team cleaned this car after every run! He wasn’t all show and no go though: I have never seen an S14 smoke the tyres like this in my life! Most of my shots are just billowing smoke. At least in this one you can see the car.

Lexus SC300/400 or Toyota Soarer (whatever you call them in your part of the world: luxury car; full-leather suit; automatic gearbox. Not for drifting you might think? Wrong. Ahmed Al Ameri proved that. Obviously you need to start with a manual conversion and strap on a turbo or full 2JZ-GTE transplant, but there is no doubting that the Soarer is a capable drift car. From behind the lens, it was also one of the more photogenic cars on track.
