“It’s the best looking 911 ever made,” he says. “It still retains the original era 911 style, but there’s a contemporary look too with the rounded curves, like the really sloped back end that moulds into the taillights. But if you look at the car side-on, you can see it’s a sixties 911. It’s still got two wipers at the front that sit to the left of the driver’s seat and the exposed handle. It’s even still got the rain gutter! So yeah, it draws a lot of attention. I just love it!”

Cameron certainly doesn’t begrudge the 993’s moment in the spotlight. This is, after all, a car he has yearned for since he was a teenager; right down to the Ocean Blue Metallic paint finish and Cashmere interior. As you can imagine then, wanting this particular Porsche and tracking it down are two entirely different things.

“I’ve always wanted a 993, and the C4S version in particular, because it’s a basic Carrera but with the Turbo body, the Turbo running gear, the suspension, the brakes, and the nicer level interior. But it took a year of searching to find. I looked at what few cars there are here in the UAE market, and honestly, they were not in great condition. So I checked out the United States instead. This one was located in central US in a place called Casper, Wyoming, which is in the middle of nowhere!
“There were two owners before me. The first guy didn’t give the service records to the second, but luckily the second owner is an avid Porsche enthusiast. So I got all the records off him, and he swore to me that when he bought the car, he had it completely checked out. In fact, I still talk to him! We get on quite well.”

Even though Cameron has lived in the UAE for seven years now, the 993 itself has only been in the region for nine months, not counting the time spent through shipping, customs, and completing the necessary paperwork, of course.
“When the deal was done, I trucked the car to Los Angeles where it was loaded onto a container and shipped here to Dubai. Altogether it took two and a half months. That basically involved finding the car, having it inspected, negotiating with the seller, arranging the trucking to LA, and exportation from there. Shipping companies always say it will be 30 days on the water, but it’s never 30 days! It’s more like 45 or 50!”

Once united with his new pride and joy though, Cameron soon got to work. The 14-year-old Porsche itself was still stock, and there were a few adjustments required before he truly had the car of his dreams.
“In terms of the wheels, this is the most aggressive setup you can do on this model: there’s some pretty aggressive camber on the rear wheels too. Some purists say the biggest you should go is up to 18”, but I like the look of 19”. So to incorporate those, I had to roll the rear fenders a little bit. This means I’ve got to open the door to reverse sometimes. You just can’t see the curbs!

“I prefer the lowered look of the car: not slammed, but just low enough that it gives a more aggressive stance. So I’ve lowered it with H&R coilovers, I’ve put 19” RUF replica wheels on with Pirelli P-Zero rubber, and I’ve changed the stock exhaust for a Fister Stage III, just to give it THAT burble. Oh, and a new gearshift knob!
“Mods-wise, I’ve spent $8000. Including purchasing and shipping, etc, I’m out $50,000.” And even now, there’s still work to be done: “it’s a 14-year-old car, and the fuel tank is deteriorating, so there’s a smell of fuel working its way into the car”.

So many of one’s heroes, when met face-to-face for the first time can prove disappointing after years spent on that almost insurmountable pedestal. For Cameron though, the 993 is just as good as he imagined it would be, though that’s not to say driving said Carrera around Dubai is without its problems.
