Casualties on the day included Kuwait’s Mufeed Mubarak, Swiss lady driver Edith Weiss, Lebanon’s Robert Aaraj, and the irrepressible Michel Saleh.

The UAE-based Lebanese driver, who has started every Dubai Rally since the event began, was within 400 metres of the end of the final stage when he lost the front left wheel on his Mitsubishi and went out. “That’s rallying,” he said.
