This switch would come, but onlookers would have to wait for the latter stages of race two. Separated by a little under half a second, Al Ali (who had managed to stay ahead of Canal this time after his second electric start of the day) was caught by surprise as the Spaniard threw a late lunge up the inside heading onto the back straight.
Despite an attempted rebuff from the sophomore driver, Canal held his nerve to secure his second consecutive second-place finish of the day. Al Ali was content with two thirds, and the fastest lap in the opening race.
Rahul Mayer enjoyed a solid debut to secure fourth in the opening race after a well-timed dive past Harsh Rajpal, who could do nothing to grab the place back and had to settle for fifth. Malaysian Mayer though found life a lot easier in the second encounter when his rival headed for pit road before the first lap had been completed.
Rajpal would eventually get the Ralph Firman designed single-seater back out on-track, albeit now one lap down. The Indian rookie had to content himself with last place after trying desperately to stay out of the way of the leaders throughout the final race of the day. Mayer meanwhile coasted to an easy fourth place to accompany fifth place from race one.
Thanks to Rajpal’s problems, debutant Saeed Bintouq managed to take a fifth place away from his opening Formula Gulf 1000 weekend. Still unfamiliar with the car, the Emirati driver spent the weekend on setup and generally improving his laptimes.

Dwarfed by both Canal and Al Ali on the podium, Natasha Seatter was nevertheless flying high at the Dubai Autodrome. Sometimes time does heal all wounds.
