Wandering away from the startline for a quick scotch egg and a Red Bull, the crankandpiston lens made a swift detour through the motorsport paddock. First on the agenda of multi-horsepowered track stars was the Group C Porsche 962 piloted by Derek Bell, former-Formula One driver Hans Stuck and Al Holbert in the 1987 World Sports-Prototype Championship. The Rothman Racing trio, after 355 grueling laps, also took category victory at that year’s Le Mans 24hrs.

Just around the corner from that we find Dan Gurney’s All-American Racing Eagle from 1966. The first driver to win races in sportscars, IndyCars, NASCAR and Formula One, and – now as a team owner – has been a prominent figure on the American motorsport scene since 1958. Three times an Indy 500 podium finisher, Gurney never quite managed to scoop ‘the big one’. Perhaps his most hair-raising attempt came during the 1966 running at the Brickyard, in which his #31 Eagle and ten of Gurney’s fellow competitors were eliminated after an enormous accident just moments after the green flag dropped.

Before the Goodwood gates slam closed for another year, there was just enough time for one last look around the varying paddocks, within which was hidden this. The Morgan Tri-Star may not be the most obvious choice for a trackday car given the lack of a fourth wheel, but the Gulf livery, 1950s nostalgia, and awesome outboard 2.0l V-twin engine are enough to make one re-consider. Bonus point if you spotted the subtly hidden tax disc first time around too.
