Alongside the new rear fender, lowered just enough, also comes a single seat from Heartland USA. This setup allows me to add a pillion seat for passengers (every rebel biker needs a posse, after all). There’s also a new street type drag handlebar, giving a much racier visage than before thanks to the diamond black cables.
The Harley team has also fitted a removable windscreen with integrated speaker. Rather than just scaring small children as I roar past on the daily commute to work, the Fat Boy doubles up as a weekend toy, and I’m very much looking forward to hours on the open road. I feel I’ll enjoy the experience even more without tyre debris and empty crisp packets striking my helmet as I go.
Onto the meat of the matter: performance. This is more of a highlights reel than a comprehensive walkthrough, but the new Vances and Hines exhaust, Roland Sands air filter, new camshafts, and a super tune all add up to pump out just enough additional HP and torque from the Twin Cam to leave cars for dead at the lights.
I didn’t want to go too overboard with the oomph-gauge: I’m not overly keen to barrel roll over the rear tyre when I fully open the throttle, but just to be on the safe side, we also installed new Roland Sands hand grips and foot pegs.
The six-speed gearbox has been given a tweak to make sure the new power runs smoothly through the Bullet Hole Disc cast aluminium wheels.
In all the work has taken just over three months, and I’ve been looking forward immensely to the day – today – the covers are thrown off Fat Boy Version 2.0. Et voila!
But static shots and a new screensaver are not what I came for today. I’ve been waiting to put my new ride to the test, and there’s a whole emirate through which to put this bespoke Harley through its paces.
The guys probably won’t mind if I leave work early today.
