There’s solid responsiveness through the steering and plenty of feel for the road through the enormous front tyre. Give the throttle a bit of oomph and the idling power can easily throw a monstrous left-hook if you’re not paying attention. There’s plenty of poke certainly, and if I keep twisting my right wrist the Softail will eventually hit 180kph. Stamp on the brakes and the only way you’ll scrub speed faster is by hitting a tree.

But that would be missing the point. On a Harley, getting from A to B is not the priority. It’s the feeling you get whilst doing so. You wouldn’t for instance get behind the wheel of a 1960s E-Type Jaguar and hope your journey only lasts twenty minutes.

That the Softail would provide that Harley Davidson ride was beyond question. That the bike can also be ridden with vim and vigour is slightly more surprising. Either way though, given the bike’s contrasting riding styles, chances are this Harley Davidson won’t leave many of you sitting on the fence. And in all likelihood, neither will this post.
