Saying that, the brutish, gnarled aesthetics on the outside look fantastic: the air inlets in the bonnet may be fake, but the 19-inch alloys, subtly curvaceous rear wing, and ever-so-slightly heightened rear suspension make a serious impression. As do the Brembo brakes. Throw the anchor out and you’ll be hard pushed to stop yourself going through the windscreen, despite the slightly portly nature of the Genesis making an impression on the front end.

The V6 offers great grunt once it’s out of the starting blocks, but the coupe’s slightly laboured start might have something to do with the near-1500kg curb weight of the Genesis (nearly 200kg more than the 86). It’s not enough to spoil the drama of the drive, but weight of the big block V6 on the front end can cause the front wheels to wash wide, while the change in weight distribution through the bends can leave the back-end feeling a bit tail happy. Still there’s enough balance through the steering to make sure the rear wheels behave themselves, and you’ll rarely find yourself out of control.

Ah yes, the steering. There’s heft and plenty of it, championed with a serious amount of feel for the front Pirellis. Up at cruising speeds, there is some noticeable wheel wobble, but we’ve attributed this to the badly kerbed front right wheel from a previous test rather than being a major flaw in the Coupe’s setup. Solid weight means you are encouraged to really work the steering wheel to get the most from the performance. Driving this Coupe in a straight-line may be fun, but through the corners is where you’ll really raise yours eyebrows.

So, have we stumbled across the next big thing in sports coupes? Not quite. The Hyundai is great fun, and only descent into nightfall stops crankandpiston’s charge across the desert. Planting the right foot and awakening the V6 could replace caffeine as your early morning stimulant, and solid feel through the steering shows that the Genesis Coupe really is a car you can grab by the scruff of the neck and administer a solid beating. But it’s less nimble than we’d like it to be (a leather interior and a weighty V6 block do add up), while slightly cumbersome changes on downshifts can spoil your momentum when you’re really on it.
