The rumours have been floating around the internet for almost a year now that Alfa Romeo would be reviving the Spider and production would be based on the next generation Mazda MX-5.
Mazda and Fiat have both officially confirmed that production will indeed begin in 2015 at Mazda’s plant located in Hiroshima, Japan.
The Mazda MX-5 and Alfa Romeo Roadster will be ‘two differentiated, distinctly styled, iconic and brand-specific roadsters featuring rear-wheel drive’ and receive brand specific engines.
Both models are being developed for the global market which will see Alfa Romeo return to sales in the United States, a market they pulled out off in 1995.
If the Alfa Romeo variant resembles anything like the Pininfarina 2uettottanta Concept (pictured above) then it is sure to be a winner.
