Indeed, so confident am I in the Wrangler’s handling, that only the trickiest of sections require 4WD. The rear wheels can handle everything else nicely, giving me time to enjoy the view, take the occasional snap, and offer shouts of encouragement to passing mountain bikers from the comfort of my air-conditioned two-seater.

Back in the desert, now three hours later, I have at least managed to pick up some momentum. Only 15psi of air remains in the tyres, and the traction control is very much off, both of which allow the Wrangler to traverse the dunes in high-range 4WD with little in the way of resistance, now that the prawn behind the wheel is actually paying attention.

This is not something that can be said for some of my fellow event goers, however. One family in particular has grounded its Grand Cherokee atop a dune, and which is now up to its underbelly in sand. They, like myself, have neither GPS nor a shovel, and have been forced to wait for an event marshal to turn up to be rescued. My attempts to help push the Cherokee back into play have simply pushed most of the Arabian desert into my trainers, but fortunately the event crew arrives to help – in their own Wrangler – before I am called on to try again.

Though it gives almost half its weight to its portlier brethren, the Wrangler has both the ground clearance and the low range torque to ensure it can pull with grunt and not wind up buried to its buttocks in the sand. Not only that, as I have already discovered over the rocky wadi terrain, but good feel for the front end means that pointing the Wrangler in the right direction allows the rescue mission to be completed without unnecessary hassle. Okay, we’re not talking pinpoint supercar sharpness, especially with less than half than normal amounts of air in the tyres, but there’s more than enough feel to keep the nose pointed where the driver wants it.

Soon everyone is back on the ground, celebratory backslaps are being handed out, and our convoy sets off en-mass for our finishing point at Kharn Murrah, a hillock with a radio tower conveniently located on the top of it….

…trouble is we’re still just outside Fossil Rock, some 20km away. It’s time to dispense with the remaining sandwich and fruit cobblers in our Jamboree welcome bags, and get cracking.

A quick burst along the winding stretches of desert pass mean we make up time surprisingly quickly. Even though I’m careering through clouds of dust at speeds I’d rather not mention and with pretty much non-existent vision, the capabilities of the Wrangler are still impressing me. The engine is taking some pretty severe punishment at the hand of my right boot (I am still in high-range 4WD at this point), but refuses to give up the ghost in a flurry of black smoke.
